Part 1/3: Empowerment for Musicians - Finding Your Place in Berlin’s Music Scene

Neu in Berlin – und irgendwo zwischen Musikmachen, Booking, Förderanträgen, Selbstständigkeit, Networking und der Frage: Wie finde ich hier eigentlich meinen eigenen Weg?

In dieser dreiteiligen Workshopreihe mit Jamila Al-Yousef geht es um Empowerment, Orientierung und konkrete Strategien für Musiker:innen mit Flucht- und Migrationserfahrung.

Wir schauen gemeinsam auf Fragen wie: Wie positioniere ich mich als Künstler:in, ohne mich verbiegen zu müssen? Wie navigiere ich Barrieren, kulturelle Codes und Diskriminierung? Wie finde ich Förderungen, Netzwerke und Menschen, die mich wirklich weiterbringen? Und wie können wir uns gegenseitig unterstützen, statt alles alleine herausfinden zu müssen?

Es wird praktisch, persönlich und kollektiv - mit Tools aus Musikbusiness und Selbstmanagement, Raum für Erfahrungsaustausch und kleinen Impulsen zum Ausprobieren zwischen den Terminen.

Der Workshop richtet sich an Musiker:innen mit Flucht- und Migrationserfahrung, die in Berlin leben und hier künstlerisch und beruflich Fuß fassen möchten.

Ein Projekt von Musikarbeitsmarkt transnational / Landesmusikrat Berlin, in Kooperation mit Music Pool Berlin und Meydan Kollektiv.

Über Jamila Al-Yousef

Jamila Al-Yousef ist Musikerin, Kulturwissenschaftlerin, Theatermacherin, Festivalkuratorin und Trainerin aus Berlin. Inspiriert von ihrer palästinensischen Familiengeschichte verbindet sie künstlerische Praxis seit vielen Jahren mit machtkritischer Arbeit zu Antirassismus, Empowerment und gesellschaftlicher Transformation.

Als international tourende Musikerin ihrer psychedelic desert rock Band Jamila & The Other Heroes bringt sie eigene Erfahrungen aus Songwriting, Music Release, Booking, Touring, Förderstrukturen, Selbstmanagement und Musikbusiness mit. Seit 2019 arbeitet sie zudem mit Künstler:innen, Kulturinstitutionen, Clubs und Festivals in Deutschland und international zu Empowerment, Powersharing, Antirassismus und Awareness.

Im Zentrum ihrer Arbeit steht die Frage, wie von Diskriminierung betroffene Künstler:innen nachhaltige berufliche Wege entwickeln können, ohne sich dabei selbst zu verlieren – und wie Solidarität, geteiltes Wissen und kollektive Strategien dabei helfen können, vom reinen Überleben ins Gestalten zu kommen.

New to Berlin - and somewhere between making music, booking shows, funding applications, freelancing, networking, and the question: How do I actually find my own path here?

In this three-part workshop series with Jamila Al-Yousef, we will focus on empowerment, orientation, and practical strategies for musicians with refugee and migration experiences.

Together, we will explore questions such as: How can I position myself as an artist without having to completely reshape myself to fit in? How do I navigate barriers, cultural codes, and discrimination? Where can I find funding, networks, and people who genuinely support my development? And how can we support each other instead of figuring everything out alone?

The workshops will combine practical tools, personal reflection, and collective exchange - drawing on music business and self-management, peer learning, and small exercizes between sessions.

The workshop is aimed at musicians with refugee and migration experiences who live in Berlin and want to establish themselves artistically and professionally in the city.

About Jamila Al-Yousef

Jamila Al-Yousef is a musician, cultural scholar, theatre maker, curator, and trainer based in Berlin. Inspired by her Palestinian family history, she has long connected artistic practice with power-critical work around anti-racism, empowerment, and social transformation.

As an internationally touring musician with her psychedelic desert rock band Jamila & The Other Heroes, she brings first-hand experience of booking, touring, funding, self-management, and navigating the music industry. Since 2019, she has also worked with artists, cultural institutions, clubs, and festivals across Germany and internationally on empowerment, power-sharing, anti-racism, and awareness.

At the heart of her work is the question of how artists affected by discrimination can build sustainable careers without losing themselves along the way - and how solidarity, shared knowledge, and collective strategies can help us move from surviving to shaping our own paths.
